Remote Wilderness

British Columbia is so huge that most people who live here rarely see it all. It’s so vast that you’d need well over a month to properly explore it all. BC is nearly four times the size of Great Britain, and larger than any USA state except Alaska. Besides Alaska, there are only 31 nations in the world larger in surface area than BC. With all this land, one would assume a high head count, but BC’s population is just over 4.5 million, averaging 4.77 people per square kilometre.

The Wild

Home to more than half of the Canada’s wildlife and fish species, BC is the most biologically diverse province.  In addition, with a mix of temperate rainforests, dry pine forests, alpine meadows, and even a desert, it is the most ecologically diverse province.

1 in 4 North American grizzly bears are found in BC. Also, with a population estimated between 120,000 and 160,000, BC is home to one quarter of all black bears in Canada.  Khutzeymateen Provincial Park in Northern BC is Canada's only grizzly bear sanctuary.

Found only on the central and north coastal rainforests of BC, the Kermode bear is a rare and genetically unique subspecies of the black bear.  The Kermode, or as locally known the "Spirit Bear", is a black bear with white fur.  It is estimated that there are less than 400 of these bears in existence.  The highest concentration is found around Princess Royal Island in the Great Bear Rainforest—where it is said that one-tenth of the black bears born are white.

Most of Canada's bald eagle population is found along the Pacific coast of BC. It is a widespread year-round resident. Viewing these large birds of prey in the wild is very rewarding, and they can often be spotted in wildlife tours throughout BC.

Ever Changing Landscapes

BC is dominated by 10 main mountain ranges: Rocky Mountains, Purcell Mountains, Selkirk Mountains, Monashee Mountains, Cariboo Mountains, Coast Mountains, Cassiar Mountains, Vancouver Island Ranges, Queen Charlotte Mountains, and St Elias Mountains. It is no wonder that BC has some of the best riding in the world. What goes up, must come down!

BC is home to a variety of different landscapes. The climate can change considerably over short distances. During the peak motorcycle riding months, from May to September, great weather is never hard to find. If you are riding in the summer month, prepare for the heat, some places in the province can reach temperatures above 40 C.

Beyond the Ride

Great equipment and excellent roads are only the beginning. Western Canada has a lot to offer; the region has an internationally praised wine country, unparalleled wildlife viewing and a wide selection of heritage sites.

Gold Rush in BC

The discovery of gold in the Fraser River and the Cariboo brought a rapid influx of prospectors, merchants, pioneers and other colourful figures to BC in the 1860s. They came from around the world, arriving from as far away as China. It was a time of rapid economic expansion; sleepy hamlets became bustling cities, and new roads, railways and steamships were constructed to carry the extra load.

Boomtowns were born and legends made, but not all experienced good fortune. The Aboriginal peoples lost most of their ancestral lands and, in 1876, First Nations populations were made subject to the federal Indian Act, which regulated every aspect of their lives.

BC's Cultural Diversity

Today, BC's population is wonderfully diverse. More than 40 major Aboriginal cultural groups are represented in the region. The province's large Asian communities have made Chinese and Punjabi the most spoken languages after English. There are also sizeable German, Italian, Japanese and Russian communities – all creating a vibrant cultural mosaic in which distinct cuisine, architecture, language and arts thrive.

BC’s Wine Country

BC’s thriving wine industry attracts winemakers from all across the globe.  B.C. won over 2,000 medals in 2012, internationally praised as a leader the wine making industry. The interior of Southern British Columbia is known as the Okanogan. This region has hot, dry summers, perfect for growing grapes. The area is also famous for the other fruits grown in the region. Apples, peaches and cherries are just a few of the amazing fruits and vegetables that are grown locally.
